Non-Profit Internship Funding Application - 2024/2025

Internship Eligibility
Community Partners are required to have an internship uploaded to Handshake prior to applying for funding. Internships must have specific details to be considered. Please review your internship on Handshake and ensure it contains the following:
  • Clearly outlined responsibilities and a tangible project that the intern will work on
  • Expected hours (should not exceed 10 hours/week during academic year) and duration of the internship (i.e. fall semester, spring semester, entire academic year, summer)
  • Location of the work site and whether it is located along the KAT transit line
Funding Support - Additional Information
Through the generous support of donors and local foundations, Kenyon College is able to provide a limited funding to support students who want to further their academic and career interests through an internship at a local nonprofit. Organizations applying for funding should list their positions as "unpaid" and Kenyon will notify the partner of the awarded status of the internship. Awards are granted on a position-by-position basis and can cover up to a full Academic Year or 10 weeks of Summer funding for a student. Awards are paid directly to the student intern by Kenyon College. The quality of the internship experience, financial need of the nonprofit, and responses to the 'Supplemental Funding Questions' will be used to determine the sites selected for student awards.

An organization will NOT be considered for award funding if it is:
  1. Owned or operated by immediate family members or faculty/staff of Kenyon College;
  2. Substantially involved with lobbying or influencing a political campaign;
  3. Intending to hire the intern to engage in inherently religious activity (e.g. worship, prayer, proselytizing, bible study, etc.);
  4. a corporate and private sector, for-profit company.

Is your organization a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6)?

501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) status is required for funding consideration. These designations are commonly referred to as charitable organizations that have federal tax exemption. Filed with the IRS, the organization must not be for the benefit of private interests and no part of the net earnings may go to the benefit of a private shareholder or an individual.

Supplemental Funding Questions

Applications for funding are reviewed based on a number of criteria. Priority consideration is given to those organizations that help advance solutions to pressing issues in Knox County, serve underrepresented populations, and/or help beautify the local area. Additionally, consideration is given to the quality of the internship experience as defined by the job description, and the opportunity for the intern's work to contribute to the Knox community as well as to an intern's personal development. The below questions will further help the review committee to assess these priority considerations better.

The College will provide you with an update regarding your application on the Award Notification Date on the Key Dates document, posted to the Community Internship Program website
